From trying out new hobbies to decluttering your workspace, these tried and true techniques will help you break free from your creative rut and discover new sources of inspiration. So next time you’re feeling stuck, give one of these easy ways to spark creativity a try and see where it takes you!
1. Experiment with an Alternate Form of Creativity
One great way to get your creative juices flowing again is to experiment with another form of creativity. As a children’s picture book author and illustrator, I often view personal creativity and fulfillment in those back and white terms. But when I’m stuck on a project or not experiencing the flow of creative ease, trying something completely different tends to spark new ideas and refresh my perspective. Maybe a writing project isn’t coming along, but I can participate in a craft project with my kids. Perhaps I’m stuck on my next book idea. This could be the perfect time to cook a special dinner or dessert for my family. Changing your focus from one area where you’re struggling to another that’s completely different frees your brain to reset and renew.
2. Take a Walk in Nature
Speaking of trying something new, taking a walk in nature can also be a great way to clear your mind and find inspiration. Whether you live near the mountains, the forest or the coast, the sights, sounds, and smells of the great outdoors can help clear your mind and allow new ideas to flow in. Even a leisurely stroll through a park or hike along a scenic trail will help you feel more relaxed and less pressured to create. You may also stumble upon unexpected sources of inspiration! So go ahead, lace up your shoes! Bring the kiddies if you need to! But step outside and see what creativity you may unlock.

3. Listen to Music Outside Your Comfort Zone
Listening to music outside of your comfort zone is another fun way to reignite creativity. Consider listening to new genres or artists that you wouldn’t typically explore. Some of my favorites are listening to music I loved in high school or in my childhood. I especially love international music, as words and rhythms that are new to me help my mind wander rather than listening to and following along with songs and lyrics I know. So try diving into classical music, high energy music, restorative music. Anything that moves you. All you need is your headphones and an open mind!
4. Visit a Museum or Art Gallery
Our community doesn’t have a lot of museums or art galleries, unfortunately. That’s why getting outdoors works best for me. And as an homeschool mom, if I’m hitting a museum, it’s probably for children. Even still, stepping outside of your normal routine and scenery can help you create a new artistic spark and inspire new ideas. Take time to wander. Let colors, shapes and sounds inspire you. Notice little details, stories, and feelings you experience. You may uncover connections and perspectives that you hadn’t considered before!
5. Get Moving with Your Favorite Exercise
Another way to invigorate your creativity is to get moving with exercise. Physical activity can not only improve your mood and energy levels but also spark fresh ideas by allowing your mind to wander and make new connections. Whether you prefer running, yoga, pilates, or simply taking a walk through the neighborhood, moving your body can help clear your mind and rejuvenate your creative thinking.
6. Declutter a Space
Yesterday, our family returned from our trip to Boston. I was completely worn out and soon realized I couldn’t focus or accomplish much at home without cleaning up cluttered spaces around the house. (And as a homeschool mom, our house tends to have plenty of clutter spots!) Sometimes, it’s my workspace. But it might also be a counter, drop zone, or the kids’ rooms. Set a timer and clear out a bit to start sparking your creativity. You’ll notice that doing so will help you resolve feelings of overwhelm and help you better focus on creative or household projects. Decluttering will also help free your mind to generate new ideas. Once you’ve cleared out the excess distractions, you’ll be in the perfect mindset to dive back into your latest project with renewed ideas and perspectives.
7. Read a Book Outside Your Typical Genre
I love reading books that teach me something. But when I am tired or creatively drained, books outside my preferred genre help me detach and renew creatively. Stepping away from your usual preferences can also open your mind to new storytelling techniques, perspectives, and ideas that you may not have considered before. Whether it’s delving into a mystery novel when you typically read romance, or exploring historical fiction instead of fantasy, immersing yourself in a different genre can provide fresh inspiration and spark your creativity in unexpected ways. I recently exchanged my typically non-fiction habit for a classic called The Enchanted April. It was a fun, sweet and comforting read that made such a great break from the productivity grind I typically read about.
8. Change Up Your Environment
Another effective way to reignite your creative spark is by changing your environment. Do you usually work at home? Try working from a cafe. Is there a library where you can plug in? Or maybe a spot at a park on a nice day?
Once you’ve relocated to a new environment, take the time to observe your surroundings and let them influence your work. Notice the colors, textures, and sounds around you, and see how they can inform your creativity. Embrace the change and let it guide you towards fresh ideas and innovative solutions. By embracing a new setting, you can foster a renewed sense of creativity and bring your projects to life in unexpected ways.
9. Rest
Sometimes, try as we might, our creativity may just need to recharge with a little bit of rest. It can seem counter intuitive. Productivity feels good or needs to happen to meet someone else’s deadline or our own. But once we’ve taken some time to rest, whether with a nap, a book, a movie, or cup of tea, the time spent will be worth it. Your creativity will come roaring back and you’ll be an inspired and creative force once again.
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it’s easy to fall into a creative rut. But fear not – there are plenty of unexpected ways to spark your creativity and get your creative juices flowing again. Whether it’s trying a new hobby, taking a walk in nature, or decluttering your workspace, the possibilities are endless. So next time you find yourself feeling uninspired, challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Who knows? Your next great idea may be just around the corner.
